One word: budget.

Judging by the comic way they presented the short scene of Kristy Swanson dreaming of being a past Slayer, I'm relieved that they didn't film any of the other past Slayer scenes.

Isn't that a good thing?

Depends on what you prefer in fiction: smooth and harmonious relationships - including mentor/student relationships - in which people keep telling each other how awesome they are, or relationships that start off as more snarky and antagonistic relationships where people are prone to being critical and only later get to show how much they care about each other. It's a matter of taste which one you prefer. I'm only noting the difference. But it does add up to the overall impression of the movie avoiding anything that might be even remotely 'edgy', very relatively speaking (I feel a bit silly calling things like snarky mentor/student relationships, teen sex or people wearing punk clothes 'edgy', but apparently it was too much for this movie).
